- An Over/Under bet is when you predict whether the total score of a game will surpass or fall short of a set amount.
What Is An Over/Under Bet?
Over/Under bets, also known as Totals, allow bettors to forecast whether the total number of points, goals, or runs scored in a game will exceed or fall short of a specific value set by the bookmaker.
For example, let’s say there is an upcoming basketball game, and the bookmaker has set the total points to 220.5. If you place an Over bet, you’re betting that the total number of points scored by both teams will be over 220.5. If you place an Under bet, you’re betting that the total number of points scored will be under 220.5.
The bookmaker may adjust the total points line based on factors such as the teams’ current form, injuries, or other relevant factors that may affect the final score.
Over/Under bets are popular in sports such as football, baseball, hockey, and cricket.
Example
Let’s take another example of a football match between Team A and Team B, where the bookmaker has set the total goals at 2.5.
If you place an Over bet, you’re betting that the total number of goals scored by both teams will be over 2.5. If you place an Under bet, you’re betting that the total number of goals scored will be under 2.5.
So, if the final score of the match is 1-2 with Team B victorious , the total number of goals scored would be 3, which is over 2.5. If you placed an Over bet, you would win.
However, if the final score was a 1-1 draw, the total number of goals scored would be 2, which is under 2.5. If you placed an Under bet, you would win.
What To Look For In Over/Under Bets
Here are some key considerations bettors should look for when placing Over/Under only bets:
Value Odds
When considering an Over/Under bet, it’s essential to assess the value of the odds offered by the bookmaker. The total points line set by the bookmaker represents the anticipated total score for the game. Identifying situations where the bookmaker’s odds provide value can enhance your profitability in the long term.
For instance, if your calculations suggest a higher probability of the match surpassing the total points than implied by the odds, placing an Over bet may hold value. On the other hand, if you determine a greater likelihood of the match falling short of the total points line, placing an Under bet might be advantageous.
Historical Performance Analysis
Analysing historical data from previous matchups between the teams (or teams of a similar calibre), can offer valuable insights into the average number of goals or points scored. This data can aid in making well-informed decisions when placing Over/Under bets.
Recent Form
It’s important to consider the teams’ recent performances, taking into account their offensive and defensive strengths, as well as their overall form, to help you determine whether an Under or Over bet is likely to be successful.
