Over/Under Bet | What Are Totals Bets? How Do they Work?

An Over/Under bet is where you wager on whether the total score of a game will be over or under a predetermined amount.

What Is An Over/Under Bet?

Over/Under bets, also known as Totals bets, are a popular type of wager in sports betting that allow you to bet on whether the total number of points, goals, or runs scored in a game will be over or under a specific value set by the bookmaker.

For example, let’s say there is an upcoming basketball game, and the bookmaker has set the total points line at 220.5. If you place an Over bet, you’re betting that the total number of points scored by both teams will be over 220.5. If you place an Under bet, you’re betting that the total number of points scored will be under 220.5.

The bookmaker may adjust the total points line based on factors such as the teams’ current form, injuries, or other relevant factors that may affect the final score.

Over/Under bets are popular in sports such as football, baseball, hockey, and cricket.

Example

Let’s say there’s a football match between Team A and Team B, and the bookmaker has set the total goals line at 2.5.

If you place an Over bet, you’re betting that the total number of goals scored by both teams will be over 2.5. If you place an Under bet, you’re betting that the total number of goals scored will be under 2.5.

So, if the final score of the match is Team A 1 – Team B 2, the total number of goals scored would be 3, which is over 2.5. If you had placed an Over bet, you would win.

However, if the final score was Team A 1 – Team B 1, the total number of goals scored would be 2, which is under 2.5. If you had placed an Under bet, you would win.

What To Look For In Over/Under Bets

Here’s my suggestions for what bettors should look for in Over/Under only bets:

Value Odds

When placing an Over/Under bet, the bookmaker sets a total points line that represents the expected total score for the match. As with any type of bet, if you can identify a situation where the bookmaker’s odds offer value, you can increase your chances of making a profit over the long term.

For example, if you calculate that there is a higher probability of a match going over the bookmaker’s total points line than the odds imply, then there is value in placing an Over bet. Similarly, if you calculate that there is a higher probability of the match going under the total points line than the odds imply, then there is value in placing an Under bet.

Track & Distance

Looking at the historical data of previous matches between the teams can give you an indication of the average number of goals or points scored, helping you make a more informed decision when placing an Over/Under bet.

Recent Form

It’s important to consider the teams’ recent performances, taking into account their offensive and defensive strengths, as well as their overall form, to help you determine whether an Under or Over bet is more likely to be successful.
